CCO’s New Report Illuminates Gaps in Clinicians’ Knowledge of MACRA and How CME Can Help Overall Performance Scores

Survey Data Show Most Clinicians Lack Awareness That Participation in Appropriate CME Activities Can Help Them Meet New Requirements Affecting Their Reimbursement Under MACRA

Reston, Virginia - September 14, 2018 - A new White Paper from Clinical Care Options (CCO), a global leader in the development of innovative educational programs and technology platforms, presents data illuminating clinicians’ challenges in understanding that participation in CME activities can help them achieve new requirements for healthcare reimbursement from the federal government.

The results of CCO’s survey of 227 US clinicians demonstrate profound gaps in clinicians’ general knowledge of the changes introduced by Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA). In particular, 60% were unaware that participating in appropriate CME activities not only can help them improve the quality of care they provide, but also can help them gain points toward the Improvement Activity component of their overall performance score, which in turn determines the rate of Medicare reimbursement payments that they will receive.

The ability to report participation in appropriate CME activities to meet the requirement for engagement in Improvement Activities within the Merit-Based Incentive Payments System (MIPS) is new in 2018. There is a clear opportunity for participation in such CME activities, already a trusted resource used by hundreds of thousands of clinicians, to play a significant role in enabling clinicians to demonstrate their commitment to enhancing patient outcomes and the quality of care.

“These data indicate that a great deal of work needs to be done to improve clinicians’ awareness that appropriate CME activities can help them meet the MIPS requirements for participating in Improvement Activities,” said Robin Murray, President, CCO. “At the same time, it is reassuring to see that large proportions of respondents were interested in participating in activities that carried MIPS Improvement Activity designation as well as offering CME credits or maintenance of certification points, suggesting that awareness is the key barrier to uptake.”
