New white paper explores shifting trend in digital format and delivery preferences across generations
Clinical Care Options (CCO), the leading provider of clinical educational content and technological learning and information platforms, has published a white paper reporting its research into digital CME learning preferences among physicians in different age groups. The paper “Generational Shift in the Physician Workforce: What Are the Implications for CME?” reveals interesting trends on the learning styles of both Millennial-generation clinicians and their older colleagues.
The white paper is the result of a March 2015 survey of more than 400 US-based physicians conducted by CCO. The survey revealed a clear relationship between age and level of comfort with technology in continuing medical education (CME) activities, as well as the amount of time clinicians of different age groups allot to CME and their resulting format preferences. Not surprisingly, Millennial clinicians indicated their preference for concise and relevant information that can be accessed on-demand and on the go.
Survey respondents were asked to rate the relative value of different online and live educational activities. Point-of-care resources were the most highly rated format, with a mean score of 5.43 on a 7-point Likert scale. When results were segmented by respondent age group, point-of-care resources were the only format to be scored at least 5 out of 7 by every age group, indicating the importance of mobile apps and responsive design for clinical decision support. In addition, when asked about the sources of information they use to guide their patient care, 50% identified Internet-based searching/learning as among their primary sources—more than any other format.
