Clinical Care Options® to Present at 40th Annual ONS Congress

Study shows impact of innovative learning models on oncology nursing education

Clinical Care Options (CCO), the leading provider of clinical educational content and technological learning and information platforms, along with the Annenberg Center for Health Services at Eisenhower, will present a poster at the Oncology Nursing Society’s 40th Annual Congress in Orlando, Florida, on an innovative “flipped classroom” model designed to maximize learning opportunities for busy clinicians. The poster presentation, “Piloting a Flipped Classroom for Oncology Nursing Education,” will be available Thursday, April 23, and Friday, April 24, in Room 224 of the Orange County Convention Center.

The program titled, “Nursing Considerations in the Care of Patients With Multiple Myeloma,” included flipped classroom concepts in which nurses were offered online education to help build a foundational knowledge of multiple myeloma so that they would be better prepared to maximize learning opportunities with nursing experts in a subsequent live educational workshop.

An analysis of the data gathered from the program demonstrated that learners who completed the foundational prework were better prepared to answer questions related to program objectives prior to participating in the live workshop when compared with those who did not. The full study findings will be presented in the poster, authored by oncology nursing expert, Beth Faiman, PhD, MSN, APRN-BC, AOCN,of Taussig Cancer Center, along with CCO staff members Elaine S. DeMeyer, RN, MSN, AOCN; Davecia R. Cameron, MS; Andrew D. Bowser, ELS, CHCP; Erik D. Brady, PhD, CHCP; and Kevin L. Obholz, PhD.

“This study suggests that a flipped classroom approach to the rapidly evolving field of cancer nursing education can offer improved foundational knowledge that will in turn maximize clinical skill development in the live education setting,” said Trish Bates Doolin, Executive Vice President and General Manager, CCO Oncology. “We congratulate all of the authors on their pioneering work reported in this poster. As an organization committed to innovation in continuing education, CCO is honored to share these latest findings with our colleagues at ONS Congress.”
