Program Targeting US Gastroenterology Nurses Identifies Poor Understanding of IBD Therapies
Reston, Virginia - April 12, 2019 - A medical education program created and executed in partnership with Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation and Clinical Care Options (CCO) to help gastroenterology nurses improve the care of people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has uncovered gaps in nursing competence. Understanding the risk/benefit profiles and monitoring requirements for IBD therapies had the greatest pre-education and posteducation learning gaps—and the greatest improvement—suggesting that future education should continue to focus on this need. By region, the greatest need for education was in the Midwest
“Our previous research has shown that nurses are challenged to keep current with the risk/benefit profiles and clinical applications of newer IBD therapies, but this is the first time we’ve been able to pinpoint these needs by geography,” said Jen Votta, General Manager at CCO. “We identified gaps across the United States, but the largest gaps were in the Midwest.”
The live and Web-based program, which reached 944 clinicians, also identified gaps in clinicians’ competence with screening and preventive care for IBD and with applying shared decision-making to promote patients’ adherence. By the end of the educational program, clinicians’ competence was brought to a consistent high level, with clinicians improving their competence in each domain and smoothing out the geographic differences.
“Programs like this can improve the lives of people with IBD by helping gastroenterology nurses to stay current with evolving IBD management, to communicate advances to patients, and to foster adherence,” said program coauthor Michele Rubin, APN, CNS, CGRN, who is Director of Advanced Practice Nursing and Associate Director, IBD Center at University of Chicago Medicine.
